The Sinking Ship

I created The Sinking Ship after getting inspiration from a film I had recently watched called Poseidon, a large ship damaged by a brutal wave, the ship is flipped upside down and the survivors must traverse through a completely alien environment. I was highly intrigued and decided to develop something similar adding in a flare of Uncharted style for the gameplay and loop.

The level is broken down into five areas that the player will progress through, each area is designed and built on canted angles in engine (UE4) that gradually rotate as the player progresses. The first area starting at a twenty-degree angle, by doing this it gives the illusion that the ship is slowly sinking. As the level progresses the shift in balance will become more extreme and will lead to a climactic moment in the final section as the ship finally reaches a sixty-degree angle.

Below is a series of images in storyboard format to showcase the linear level design, pacing and changes of verticality within the level.

The Sinking Ship

I created the block out within Unreal Engine 4 in 3 working days. I then created a design document to support my work which took a day to complete. A link to the full document in PDF format is located below.
